Review

Periódico de ayer Héctor Lavoe lyrics meaning and English explanation

Periódico de ayer“Yesterday's Newspaper” is a Salsa song by the Puerto Rican singer Héctor Lavoe. The song was released in 1976 and it is recognized as one of the most important songs in the Salsa genre.

What makes this song so incredible and popular is the nice combination between the lyrics and the music and composition because the lyrics are relatable, Periódico de ayer told us a story of a man who compares the relationship he had with his ex to yesterday's newspaper.

A newspaper was fantastic when it was released in the morning, everyone would read to know the news, but at the noon it is going to be probably thrown up into the trash.  We all probably experienced a relationship like that, something that was incredible at first, people will talk about both of you, but in the end, people will not care about you anymore and the relationship that was so lovely at first turns out to be toxic and problematic.

Now the rhythm as in every other Salsa song is something that is intended to make you dance and move your body, the song is a quite long one as its duration is a little more than seven minutes because there are some fragments of the song where you just need to listen to the music with no lyrics and enjoy the rhythm.

Lyrics are easy to understand although there are a few complicated sentences that may difficult the experience of translate. The voice is clear but the singing can result in a little too fast for someone who isn’t used to listening to natural Spanish speaking.

Overall, Periódico de ayer is an awesome song and Salsa music is cool to listen to, you may find yourself moving your body to the music. It is a great song to study Spanish and make the learning process less tedious.
