"On the other side of the river" is a song composed by the Uruguayan singer-songwriter Jorge Drexler, the first performed in Spanish to be nominated and awarded an Oscar in the best original song category, at the ceremony held on February 27, 2005.1This song was created for the movie Motorcycle Diaries, which narrates Che Guevara's first trip through Latin America.The song can be found on the original soundtrack of the film and on Eco², a reissue of Jorge Drexler's album Eco, released in 2004.

The organizers of the Oscar Awards ceremony decided that the Uruguayan singer-songwriter should not perform his song at the ceremony, considering that Drexler was not a sufficiently well-known figure in the United States to do so. Despite not agreeing with this decision, he accepted the measures taken and clarified that this sad incident was caused by the organizers of the event and not by the Academy.During the delivery of the Oscar Awards, the song was performed by actor Antonio Banderas accompanied by guitarist Carlos Santana. Days before, Drexler had shown his disagreement with this fact, so when he came to receive the award instead of giving the respective acceptance speech, he performed a fragment of his song a cappella, somehow getting his revenge.

This beautiful song uses plain language to communicate its message of seeking oneself in the world. The words refer to water, and there is repetition of "row, row, row" sounds like a wedge song. The melody has a feeling of therapeutic rejuvenation. The words are mandates that call the audience to the animation. Drexler keeps hope in his voice, which serves as a calling and vocation for others.The melody is very soft and calm, of the alternative folk genre. His voice sings on the high notes in a nostalgic way, and one of hope for the future. His voice is very fluid, like the water feature.
