Review
Fonsi and Demi are the protagonists and they sing in their own names, "Hey Fonsi", "How's it going Demi", in this bilingual (English/Spanish) hit .
It's the old "it's not you, it's me" break up routine , but sung with smiles (maybe they know this was a 'cash-in' hit, same formula as Fonsi's record breaking "Despacito ". Or maybe I'm an old cynic. They were never romantically linked anyway in real-life.
It's an upbeat track considering the content, they don't seem to be angy with each other.
He says he has something to confess, although we don't find what specifically he did wrong. There is talk about fighting between them; but this isn't named as the reason for the break up.
It all seems rather amicable anyway. There is a hint that things might get to back together as "you only need the kiss that I always promised you" is mentioned. They are saying "just leave it", and forget about it.
The YouTube video starts with them separately, making a call between each other, and then singing and dancing, him the street somewhere, her posing around in some hot lingerie in her boudoir.
Later they meet in some dive club with the obligatory syncronised dancing with scantily dressed dancers, and bongo drums.
The lyrics are relatively easy enough to understand. The title of the song uses a common verb in one of it's many other idiomatic meanings : Echar means to "throw", but here is used to me literaly mean "throw the blame on me".
The phrase Demi uses: "Nunca de verdad" lit; "Never the truth", I've translated as "Never really" as suggested on this blog .
There is also a couple of interesting uses of the verb conocer;
In the phrase "No me conociste nunca de verdad" it should be translated as the common meaning "to know" - "you never really knew me". But later in she says "porque tu error solo fue conocerme", which is a preterite tense compound with 'fue' and better translated as meaning "met".
All in all a nice song to examine and learn from.
