Nelly Furtado Manos al aire meaning and lyrics explained
Manos al aire – “Hands in the Air” is a song by the Canadian singer Nelly Furtado. The song was released in 2009 and it is one of the few songs that Nelly Furtado has made that is completely in Spanish.
Manos al aire is a song to confront the abuse that women suffer in their relationships. Manos al aire tells us the story of a girl dressed as a military who is driving a military vehicle that is going to an unknown place, she is going with determination but as she gets close to her destiny, she changes her clothes to one more casual. We can see flashbacks of the girl with her boyfriend attending to a phycologist to treat their problems. We can analyze in the lyrics her boyfriend is abusive and probably has already reached the point of hitting her.
In the flashback, we can see both of them having an aggressive attitude toward each other. She is always supportive but every time she tries to explain her point of view, he tells her to shut up. In the song, the girl says that she has no weapons to face him, and the only thing she wants is to love him because she believes that he will change someday.
This song is a perfect example of abuse in relationships, the girl is always waiting for the guy to change but that probably will not happen. What I can criticize about the song and the video clip is that at the end of the song the girl reaches the home of the guy and forgives him hugging him, it is explicit in the song that the guy did not change so why did she forgive him?
Besides the fact that Nelly Furtado is an English-speaking native, she did a great job singing in Spanish, you can almost not notice that sometimes in the song you can hear her English accent. Overall the song is easy to practice your Spanish level, the singing is slow and the lyrics aren’t complicated, nice song to hear and expand your Spanish knowledge.
