Review

El gran varón” also known as “Simón, el gran varón” is a Salsa song by the Puerto Rican Singer Willie Colón. “El gran varón” is a classic salsa song and tells us a story of rejection and discrimination against a trans woman. The song was released in 1989 yet the theme is present in everyday life, the song was so successful that many artists created their own covers of the song. There is also a Mexican movie called “Simón, El gran varón” that relates the events from the song with more details.

The lyrics of the song, “El gran varón” tell us the story of Andrés, a father that is happy because it was born his son Simón will be his successor. Simón was raised like other kids and had a firm and strict education at home, he was told that when he grows up, he was going to study the same thing as his father. When Simón was a young man, he left his home and moved to another country, possibly the USA. Andrés and Simón communicated through letters, however, one day, Andrés decides to pay Simón an unannounced visit.

When Andrés arrived at the place his song was living, he was greeted by a woman who declared to be his song Simón. When Simón moved he changed his appearance and started using skirts, lipsticks, and handbags, yet his father was ignorant of this. When Andrés saw his son Simón turn into a trans woman he left, reject, and abandoned him never speaking to him again.

Andrés rejected his son for being a trans woman, however, many years later an old Andrés was leaving his anger to a side, yet Simón never wrote to him again, making Andrés angry. What Andrés didn’t expect is that one day he was going to receive a call from a hospital. With sadness and confusion, Andrés received the news that his son died from AIDS and nobody was there for him in the hospital ward.

The song finishes by giving a message about forgiveness and comprehension, truly a beautiful song with a great message that will stick in your mind while you learn Spanish.
